Office for iPad: Big deal, or big yawn?

It looks like Microsoft Office really is coming to the Apple iPad. Well, actually, it will most likely be a version of Office 365, but why quibble?

That’s great, right? At long last, the world’s most popular office suite will be available on the most popular tablet! Microsoft will get more customers, life will be grand for Microsoft stockholders, and Apple might even sell a few more iPads. But it’s also possible that no will give a hoot.

Who needs operating systems anymore? Not you.

write a lot about operating systems: Android, Linux, Windows, Mac OS and anything else you can think of. That’s because I’ve always been fascinated by them. I started working with technology in the late 1970s. Along the way, I’ve worked with IBM’s mainframe OS/360, Unix on DEC PDP-11, and that ancestor of all PC operating systems, CP/M-80. Operating systems ruled your user experience; you had to care about which one you used.

But more and more, we aren’t going to care.

Mozilla hires new CEO who will focus on Firefox OS

Mozilla, the company behind the popular Firefox Web browser, has been searching for a new CEO since Gary Kovacs, who came on-board in 2010, decided to leave almost a year ago. Mozilla has finally picked a new leader, former CTO Brendan Eich. With him comes change. Mozilla’s job number one will not be its Web browser, but its mobile operating system: Firefox OS.
