Free video conferencing: Coronavirus spurs special deals from WebEx, Google, others

Twitter just told all its 5,000 workers to work from home because of the COVID-19 coronavirus. It wasn’t the first, and it won’t be the last. Your company may be next. Fortunately, many video-conferencing services are now offering free access to their services for a limited time to help make life easier during the pandemic.

What’s the most popular web browser in 2020?

For ages, it was almost impossible to get hard data on which were the most popular web browsers. Sure, many companies claimed to have good information, such as NetMarketShare and StatCounter, but their numbers were massaged. The US federal government’s Digital Analytics Program (DAP), however, gives us a running count of the last 90 days of US government website visits. While it doesn’t tell us about global web browser use, it’s the best information we have about American web browser users.

Let’s Encrypt issues one-billionth web security certificate

It wasn’t that long ago that most websites weren’t secured with Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption. You could tell because the sites started with HTTP instead of HTTPS. Today, 81% of web pages use HTTPS globally, and 91% are secured in the US. For that vast increase in secure web browsing, we owe a large debt of gratitude to Internet Security Research Group (ISRG) with its Let’s Encrypt project. Let’s Encrypt has just issued its billionth web security certificate.

The for-profit takeover of the non-profit ‘.org’ top-level domain

At first glance, the proposed deal makes little sense. The Internet Society is trying to sell the non-profit Public Interest Registry (PIR), the registry for the “.org” top-level domain (TLD), to the new private-equity firm Ethos Capital for $1.135 billion. There are about 10.5 million .org domains, and most — but not all — are non-profits. Where’s the money?

Microsoft previews Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux

First thing is first, the new beta Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) is not an antiviral program for Linux desktops. No, it’s an enterprise platform designed to help you prevent, detect, investigate, and respond to Linux server and network threats.
