Intel partners with eASIC for custom cloud silicon

On May 12, Intel announced that it would develop integrated products with eASIC that combine superior processing performance and customizable hardware for data centers and the cloud.

The companies promise that these new components will be up up to two times faster than standard field programmable gate array (FPGA) for workloads like security and big data analytics. At the same time, they claim that the products will speed the time to market for custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) development by as much as 50 percent.

For containers, security is problem #1

I get it. I really do. Containers let data-center and cloud administrators put two to three times more server instances on a given server than they can with virtual machines. That means fewer servers, which means less power usage, which equals — Ka-ching! — less spending on your IT budget. What’s not to like?

Well, ahem, you see there’s this little, tiny problem. It’s unclear just how secure containers are, and there is certainly not much agreement on how to secure them or who will take that on.

PC sales continue to take a beating

PC OEMs are hoping that Terry Myerson, the head of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group, wasn’t making an idle boast when he said Windows 10 would be on a billion devices in two to three years. Linksys brings fastest Wi-Fi router ever to market

Who doesn’t love fast Wi-Fi? Thanks to 802.11ac, real-world speeds are finally cracking the 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) barrier. With the new 802.11ac multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MU-MIMO) Wave 2 finally arriving in chipsets, Gbps speeds may finally become commonplace rather than exceptional. Leading the way is Linksys with the first Wave 2 router to market: The Linksys Max-Stream AC2600 MU-MIMO Gigabit Router (EA8500).

The quarters keep going by and PC sales keep going down. Surely, though, you think, “PCs really can fall behind smartphone and tables, can they?” I’m sorry to disappoint you but by one important metric, they already have. Google announced “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan.”
