How enterprise IT pros can contribute to open source projects

When I first wrote about open source software in the 1990s, I regularly had to explain its virtues. Many businesses—particularly large companies—were frightened by what they saw as open source’s weaknesses, such as the lack of “one neck to wring” and perceived security vulnerabilities. How quaint. Today, nearly every business uses open source software.

One thing hasn’t changed, though: corporate reluctance to contribute to open source projects. Or, more to the point, in too few enterprise organizations are programmers and tech staff granted the time and freedom to participate in the open source development process.

DevOps for the hybrid cloud: Red Hat Ansible Tower 3.4

With the growth of the cloud and containers, DevOps has become increasingly important. Old-school sysadmin methods and means simply aren’t up to managing server instances that can spin up at a moment’s notice when needed. Red Hat knows that better than many companies, so its latest release, Red Hat Ansible Tower 3.4, goes even further in automating today’s IT stack.

Silly gadgets aside, IoT device inventors face many programming challenges. It’s hard adding identity, trust, and interoperability to IoT hardware. The Ockam startup will change this for the better.

TriggerMesh brings AWS Lambda serverless computing to Kubernetes

Serverless computing‘s poster child software is Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Lambda. It only has one little problem: You can use it on AWS. If you’re wedded to AWS, that’s not a problem, but if you want to use it on another cloud platform or as part of a hybrid cloud, you’re out of luck. Until now.
