SteamOS: The Linux for games is coming

Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve and its Steam game platform, wasn’t kidding when he said at LinuxCon in New Orleans that “Linux is the future of gaming.” Valve is releasing, in advance of the expected announcement of its SteamBox Linux-powered gaming console, its own Linux for gamers: SteamOS.

Penguins in Space! Asteroid mining and Linux

When I was a kid in the 60s, books such as Miss Pickerell on the Moon, On the Trail of the Space Pirates, and Robert A. Heinlein’s The Rolling Stones had me dreaming of flying rockets to asteroids with my trusty Geiger counter and pick-axe in hand. It was science fiction then. Planetary Resources is on its way to making it science-fact within the next few years.

Software Defined Network (SDN) will revolutionize datacenter and cloud networking — if everyone can agree on how to deploy it. Alcatel-Lucent has Nuage; Cisco and a host of other companies have the open-source Project Daylight, and now Juniper has its own take: Contrail and its open-source brother OpenContrail.
