Cheap Movies for your Apple TV and iPhone?

You can always buy movies for your Apple TV or iPhone from iTunes for $9.99 for older movies or $14.99 for newer films, but say you want something that’s not in Apple’s movie catalog, or you’d like to pay even less. What can you do then? Well you might consider Big Banana.

This is small new site that offers a small selection of public domain films. Don’t mistake public domain for bad. Their offerings include such classics as Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps; Howard Hawks’ delightful His Girl Friday with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell; and the zombie movie that started it all, Night of the Living Dead. With prices ranging from a $1.99 to $3.99, it’s almost impossible to beat the price.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that although the site proclaims that your information is secure, the page where you enter your financial information is not protected by SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). In other words, anyone snooping on your Internet connection could easily read your credit card information.

That’s a real shame, because I like the idea of this site a lot. There are many great public domain movies out there, and with time and money, I’m sure Big Banana could offer hundreds of great, old films at a price anyone can afford.

However, until this company ups its site’s security, I’m going to have to pass it by. I’m sure though that if Big Banana doesn’t rise to the challenge of making older movies safe to buy, some other Apple TV/iPhone film distributor will. People love classic films, people love a deal, and people want movies for their new Apple devices. The concept has ‘winner’ written all over it.
